Our Environment and Climate Change Michael Moore
Good evening ladies and gentlemen. It is my pleasure to be here to speak to you all about our environment and threats that it and we face. And I do hope by the end i have moved some of you think a lot more about our planet.
What is our environment? Our environment is everything around us from plants and animals to the non living things that surround us.
As humans we directly affect the environment around us whether this is clearing a small woodland area for resources and farmland or building massive infrastructure like roads, bridges, and dams. And well, we can't stop doing this entirely, clearing natural areas for human use, I believe it should be done in moderation and done to protect environments that are in danger.
like the rain forests in Brazil that are home to thousands of plant and animal species. But now are being cut down at an alarming rate. The Amazon rainforest is one particular case where this is a massive problem, the Brazilian government has declared their deforestation a national emergency. According to a report by the World Wide Fund for Nature in 2007, deforestation could wipe out or severely damage 60% of the Amazon rainforest by 2030.
Coral reefs like the Great Barrier Reef are also in danger due to global warming the change in temperature effects the growth of the coral. This brings me to my main point. Global warming. Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system. Firstly I think I
should address the fact that there are those who believe that climate change is not linked to recent human activities, although there are few people and very few scientists believe this the number of them is increasing.
Let me ask you something, have you ever seen a debate on climate change one between scientists ? If you have , have you noticed that most have one speaker on either side? This makes it seem to the viewer than the science community is split on the issue whereas in reality the majority of scientists believe that global warming is real, this leads to doubt. Doubt because people still feel that global warming has not yet been proven
The increase in doubt about global warming is also no thanks to the powerful and influential people today who refuse to look at the facts and go by their opinions. One such person is Donald Trump, the current president of the United States. He was well known for his outrageous statements not only on immigrants but also on climate change, he has repeatedly said how it is not happening and in one particular case he stated "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive."
Comments like this are not only false and ignorant but they are also dangerous. If more and more people ignore the visible effects and the scientific evidence of global warming than who is going to help fix this problem. I mean who would want to to prevent something they themselves don't even believe in? But global warming is a very real threat to our lives and ecosystem, our environment needs to be protected .Thank you for your time and I beg you to consider these points to help conserve the planet on which we live.
