Heir Island Sailing trip
The Heir island trip is an annual event to an island off the coast of Scibbereen in Cork. This is organised for transition years students to improve their skills on keel boats, meet new people and enjoy themselves on the beautiful island.
So on the day of the trip I met up with the others that would be going also, sadly I didn't know anyone going but I didn't really mind I expected that I would get along with and get to know them a lot better throughout the trip. So we all boarded a bus and headed for Cork, the bus ride would take 5 hours and i'm pretty sure I fell asleep for most of it . When we arrived at our destination we then had to take a ferry to the Island. Here we first saw the Island and it didn't look like much but the other side of the Island was beautiful cliffs. The island wasn't very big and it only had only 25 people living on it. The first night we played ice breakers to get to know each other better. The sailing was my favourite part of the trip they were bigger boats than I was used to but they were fine and I really enjoyed sailing them. My favourite part of the sailing was on the third day of the trip when it was very windy and I was helming. The feeling of the boat riding over waves the wind shooting past and the cold sea spray hitting your face all while you are sailing past the beautiful rocky cliff side of the Island , all that made me fell alive and ecstatic. But i didn't just do sailing on the trip the instructors also organised kayaking and other activities including cliff jumping , which was amazing. One very memorable moment was when we were taken out on kayaks at night , none of us were told why but it soon became apparent, we were out on the water when they told us the plankton in the water was bioluminescent and when we splashed the water lit up like sparks. It was the moments like this that made the Heir Island trip fantastic. |
